The Fresh Start Effect
THEY LIED TO YOU.
HEY!!!!!!!
LISTEN!!!!!!
THEY LIED TO YOU!!!!
You can start over.
I don’t care how old you are.
I don’t care how long you’ve been doing things a certain way.
I don’t care how many times you’ve tried before.
You can wake up tomorrow and say:
This is how I’m going to live my life now.
That’s it.
There’s actually psychology behind this. It’s called the Fresh Start Effect.
The idea is that certain moments in our lives create a line between who we were and who we want to become.
January 1st.
A birthday.
A new job.
Moving somewhere new.
Becoming a parent.
Going through something really hard.
These moments give us permission to say:
That was me then. This is me now.
But here’s what I love about this idea.
You don’t need to wait for one of those moments.
You can create the moment yourself.
You can wake up on some random Tuesday and decide you’re going to start training again.
You can decide you’re going to be more present with your kids.
You can decide you’re going to take your health seriously.
You can decide you’re going to stop drinking.
You can decide you’re finally going to build the thing you’ve been talking about building.
You can decide you’re going to become a better husband, wife, father, mother, friend, teammate, or leader.
There doesn’t have to be some dramatic rock bottom.
Nothing terrible has to happen first.
You’re allowed to simply decide.
I think sometimes we make change way more complicated than it needs to be.
We think we need the perfect plan.
The perfect timing.
The perfect motivation.
Sometimes you just need to draw a line in the sand and say:
I’m done living that way.
And then tomorrow, you live a little differently.
The next day, you do it again.
And again.
And again.
Eventually, the person you said you wanted to become is just who you are.
That’s why I’ve always believed so deeply in Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes.
It’s not about hating who you were yesterday.
It’s about realizing you’re not required to be that person tomorrow.
So if you’ve been waiting for January 1st…
Your birthday…
Monday…
The right opportunity…
Or someone to give you permission…
Here it is.
Start over.
Today can be the line.
Everything before today was part of the story.
Everything after today is still yours to write.
Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes.
