Who’s Winning the Conversation?
Every day there is a conversation happening inside your head.
The scary part?
You don’t always realize who is doing the talking.
Sometimes it’s a coach who doubted you years ago.
Sometimes it’s a parent who only pointed out your mistakes.
Sometimes it’s a teammate, a boss, a spouse, or someone on social media who made you question yourself.
And sometimes the people closest to you, the people who love you the most, still speak with fear instead of belief. They tell you to be realistic. To lower your expectations. To stop dreaming so big. Not because they want to hurt you, but because they’re trying to protect you from disappointment.
If you aren’t careful, their voice becomes your voice.
This is why positive self talk isn’t soft. It’s one of the greatest performance tools we have.
Sports psychologists have found that athletes who consistently practice positive and instructional self talk perform better under pressure, recover faster from mistakes, and build greater resilience over time. (Association for Psychological Science)
Because eventually, you become the person you’ve been talking to all along.
If you spend years saying,
“I’m not good enough.”
“I’ll probably fail.”
“People like me don’t do things like that.”
Your brain starts looking for evidence that those statements are true.
But if you intentionally replace them with,
“I’ve done hard things before.”
“I’m getting better every day.”
“I belong here.”
Your brain starts searching for proof of that instead.
The world is loud.
Some of the loudest voices may even come from the people sitting around your dinner table.
You can’t always choose what you hear.
But you can choose what you repeat.
Never let someone else’s fear become your inner voice.
Protect the conversation.
Train the conversation.
Win the conversation.
Because the voice that wins inside your head will eventually win your life.
