Shooting vs. Scoring
Let me ask you something:
Do you know how to shoot… or do you know how to score?
There’s a difference.
A big one.
And it separates high performers from everyone else.
Think about it like basketball:
Anyone can shoot in an empty gym.
Nice form. Clean release.
Looks good on camera.
But when the game is on the line
When the pressure’s on
When your legs are tired, the crowd is loud, and the clock is ticking…
Can you score?
Shooting is potential.
Scoring is production.
Shooting is mechanics.
Scoring is execution under pressure.
In Business...
The entrepreneur who’s always “working on something”...
The one redesigning the logo for the fifth time...
Posting LinkedIn motivation quotes...
They’re shooting.
But the one closing deals, leading a team, adjusting in real time, and delivering results?
That’s a scorer.
For Leaders...
You can know all the frameworks. Quote all the books.
Speak on panels.
That’s shooting.
But can you rally your team when morale is low?
Can you keep the culture alive through chaos?
That’s scoring.
As a Parent...
You can say “I love you.”
You can sign them up for every sport.
That’s shooting.
But can you show up when they need you most, the undivided attention?
Can you lead by example when no one’s watching?
That’s scoring.
For Athletes...
Anyone can post a hard workout.
Anyone can PR when they’re fresh.
But when the lights come on...
When the pressure mounts...
When the race gets ugly...
Do you fade or do you finish?
That’s the difference.
Even Kids Need to Know...
We tell our kids:
“Do your best.”
“Dream big.”
That’s shooting.
But are they being kind when no one’s looking?
Are they trying again after they fail?
That’s how they start to score.
The Real Scoreboard
We all know people who look like winners.
They dress the part.
Say the right things.
Have a highlight reel on social media.
But I’m not impressed by that.
You shouldn’t be either.
Because there’s only one scoreboard that matters—
The one you keep with yourself.
It tracks your discipline.
Your follow-through.
Your choices when it’s hard.
And it doesn’t lie.
Final Thought
So ask yourself today—
At home.
At work.
In life.
Are you just shooting?
Or are you scoring?
