The Truth You Don’t Want to Hear

Sometimes you have to hear what you don’t want to hear in order to get what you want.

I was talking to my book agent today about edits, timelines, and the process of getting this book across the finish line.

During the conversation, we went back to a moment early in the process when my editor told me I needed to rewrite a significant portion of the book.

I wasn’t thrilled.

Not because I didn’t believe in the work, but because I knew how much work it had already taken just to get there. I had poured everything into those pages. And now I was being told they weren’t good enough yet.

Looking back, that was exactly what I needed to hear.

Because what got me there wasn’t going to get me where we needed to go.

That sentence applies to almost every meaningful goal in life.

At some point, if you really want to grow, someone is going to tell you something you don’t want to hear.

Your business needs to change.

Your training isn’t good enough.

Your habits don’t match your goals.

Your effort isn’t producing the standard you think it is.

Your idea needs more work.

You need to start over.

The easy response is to get defensive.

The powerful response is to listen.

The people who accomplish extraordinary things aren’t the people who never get criticized, corrected, rejected, or forced to change direction.

They’re the people willing to use that information.

So when someone you trust tells you something uncomfortable, don’t immediately fight it.

Ask yourself one question:

Is this exactly what I need to hear to get where I say I want to go?

Sometimes the next level doesn’t require more motivation.

It requires a truth you didn’t want to hear.

Take it.

Use it.

Get back to work.

Because what got you here might not be what gets you there.

And that’s a good thing.
