The Common Denominator Is You
This is for Adults and Parents;
I think about football a lot.
It consumes me trying to figure out how I can get young players to see things differently.
And the more I coach, the more I realize that some of the biggest lessons I’m trying to teach kids have absolutely nothing to do with football.
IF YOU’RE INCONSISTENT, NO COACH CAN FIX THAT.
IF YOU AVOID HARD WORK, NO PROGRAM CAN SAVE YOU.
IF YOU REFUSE TO LISTEN, NO SYSTEM CAN DEVELOP YOU.
IF YOU BLAME EVERYONE ELSE, NO ENVIRONMENT WILL EVER BE GOOD ENOUGH.
And then I realized…
This isn’t a youth football problem.
It’s an adult problem.
If you’re inconsistent, no business opportunity is going to fix you.
If you avoid difficult conversations, no relationship is going to save you.
If you refuse to take accountability, changing jobs won’t solve the problem.
If you spend more time explaining why something isn’t your fault than figuring out how to make it better, eventually people stop listening.
If you need motivation every morning to do what you said you were going to do, the problem isn’t your goals.
If you keep blaming your boss, your spouse, your circumstances, your childhood, your schedule, your lack of time or your lack of opportunity, eventually you have to ask a much harder question:
What if the common denominator is me?
That’s the lesson I want these kids to understand before they become adults.
Because you can change teams.
You can change coaches.
You can change schools.
And later in life, you can change companies, relationships, cities, careers and friend groups.
Sometimes those changes are absolutely necessary.
But you take your habits, your standards, your attitude and your patterns everywhere you go.
At some point, changing your environment stops working.
You have to change yourself.
Football just gives us an opportunity to learn that lesson earlier.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
